The castle and hamlet (borgo) have their origins in the 12th century when they were owned by the Sienese noble family Pannocchieschi d'Elci. At one time the property was also owned by Cosimo de Medici. Today it comprises the castle and hamlet all together and 10 country houses in different places on 683 hectares of land. The land is made up of 450 hectares of woodlands and 233 hectares of arable land.
