Bala is a small rural community in the township of Muskoka Lakes, within the District Municipality of Muskoka in Central Ontario, Canada. It is best known for Bala Falls, the sole outlet of Lake Muskoka and the source of the Moon River, which flows to Georgian Bay.
As one of the hubs of cottage country north of Toronto, Bala’s year-round population of a few hundred swells to thousands in the summer with seasonal residents and visitors. It is recognized as Ontario’s Cranberry Capital, home to Muskoka Lakes Farm & Winery (formerly Johnston’s Cranberry Marsh) specializing in cranberry and fruit wines. Bala remains a hot spot for real estate investment and a favourite Muskoka destination for cottagers and tourists alike.
Downtown Bala, located where Lake Muskoka meets the Moon River, is a charming destination known for its events, including the award-winning Bala Cranberry Festival, held the weekend after Thanksgiving, and the iconic Kee to Bala which hosts a wide array of concerts throughout the summer. Situated at the west end of Lake Muskoka, Bala remains a popular spot for sailing due to its consistent winds.
