I<\/span>f your world appears a lot more colourful<\/span> of late, thank the muralists. Over the past<\/span> several years, murals have emerged as an<\/span> attention-getting art form with a lot of<\/span> cachet, taking over entire walls inside and<\/span> out at galleries, restaurants, hotels and public<\/span> spaces across the country. What\u2019s even better<\/span> is that it\u2019s a genre where female artists are<\/span> leading the charge \u2014 a visual manifestation<\/span> of the current cultural zeitgeist.<\/span><\/p>\n

Once maligned as a dubious practice, street<\/span> art has exploded in the digital age as a social<\/span> media-friendly way to draw attention to<\/span> neighbourhoods, causes and culture. Montreal<\/span> has been holding its annual MURAL Festival<\/span> since 2012, an 11-day celebration that has<\/span> contributed around 80 major works to the area<\/span> along Saint Laurent Boulevard. In Vancouver,<\/span> August is when the city\u2019s annual Mural<\/span> Festival takes place in the Mount Pleasant<\/span> neighbourhood, while in the Rockies, artists<\/span> participating in Calgary\u2019s Beltline Urban<\/span> Murals Project have painted about 15 new<\/span> murals since 2017. Meanwhile, Toronto\u2019s famous<\/span> Graffiti Alley has become a tourist destination<\/span> in its own right and a regular feature in walking<\/span> tours organized by the Art Gallery of Ontario.<\/span><\/p><\/blockquote>\n

In Toronto\u2019s restaurant scene, many of the<\/span> most buzzed-about hot spots are as recognizable<\/span> for their one-of-a-kind murals as they are for their cuisine. \u201cCompanies are really trying to<\/span> [give] back to the customer [by providing] a<\/span> genuine experience in a genuine space. More<\/span> importantly, I think people are looking to find <\/span>s<\/span>omething that\u2019s unique,\u201d says Madison van<\/span> Rijn, a Toronto-based artist whose work can<\/span> be seen at restaurants around town, including<\/span> Bar Isabel, El Rey and La Palma and at the<\/span> recently opened Avling Brewery & Restaurant.<\/span> Earlier this year, van Rijn was tapped by the<\/span> DesignAgency studio to create an 18.5-by-25-foot mural on the ceiling of Louix Louis, a new<\/span> restaurant lo<\/span>cated on the 31st floor of luxury<\/span> hotel The St. Regis Toronto. \u201cEssentially, the<\/span> whole thing is based around being in a glass of<\/span> whisky,\u201d she says of her mural. \u201cIt\u2019s definitely the<\/span> most opulent and involved one I\u2019ve ever done.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

For Allen Chan, founding partner at<\/span> DesignAgency, murals have always been a part<\/span> of how his team considers design. \u201cThey add texture [and] ambiance and can also be used<\/span> to create a unique and memorable moment that<\/span> underscores the history or theme of a place.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

Nowhere is that moment more apparent<\/span> than at The Drake Hotel in Toronto. This<\/span> West Queen W<\/span>est staple has had a revolving<\/span> cast of murals since it opened its refurbished<\/span> doors in 2004, including a new lobby design by<\/span> artist Anna Valdez that was unveiled this past<\/span> December. For Mia Nielsen, curator and head of<\/span> cultural programming at The Drake, the walls<\/span> offer an exciting stage for emerging artists to<\/span> push their craft on a large scale. \u201cThey don\u2019t get<\/span> to do that every day,\u201d says Nielsen. \u201cThese large<\/span> spaces [create] opportunities for artists to really<\/span> push their work and to experiment with ideas.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

When the Drake Mini Bar opened in<\/span> the city\u2019s downtown last May, Nielsen<\/span> commissioned artist <\/span>Rajni Perera to create a<\/span> custom wall-to-wall mural. \u201cI was thinking<\/span> about new money in the city and people of<\/span> colour taking up the space of the arbiters of<\/span> style and luxury and glamour,\u201d says Perera of<\/span> her warm jewel-toned portrait. Since her studies<\/span> at OCAD University<\/span>, Perera\u2019s murals have<\/span> come and gone from the walls at art venues like<\/span> the Triennale Banlieue\/Suburban Triennial<\/span> in Laval, Quebec, and the Art Gallery of York<\/span> University in Toronto, but saying goodbye to<\/span> her work isn\u2019t something she minds. \u201cI was<\/span> raised a Buddhist, and absolutely nothing is<\/span> permanent,\u201d she says. \u201cThis is the ultimate<\/span> indulgence and the opposite of permanence.<\/span> You\u2019re going to put a lot of work into<\/span> something that\u2019s going to <\/span>be there and then it\u2019s<\/span> gone. But while it was there, it was great.\u201d<\/span><\/p><\/blockquote>\n

For Kazakhstan-born illustrator Ola Volo,<\/span> who splits her time between Montreal and<\/span> Vancouver, painting murals has taken her<\/span> across North America, from L.A. to New York<\/span> City and, this past summer, to Hamilton, Ont.<\/span> Volo works primarily outdoors in public spaces<\/span> where her work, she says, has the power to<\/span> transform entire neighbourhoods. \u201cI look at<\/span> the walls and how accessible they are to the<\/span> public and how anyone can stumble upon it.<\/span> Even if you\u2019re not interested in art, you want<\/span> something that catches your eye and makes you<\/span> stop,\u201d she says of her stylized folk art\u2013inspired<\/span> pieces in places like Vancouver\u2019s Kitsilano<\/span> area and downtown Sudbury. \u201c[Artworks are]<\/span> an unapologetic way to take over space and<\/span> change a block or a neighbourhood that used<\/span> to be abandoned, not looked at as anything or<\/span> maybe even considered unsafe.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

It\u2019s this transformative quality that makes<\/span> murals so attractive to artists and viewers<\/span> alike, says The Drake\u2019s Nielsen. \u201cThat\u2019s part of<\/span> what\u2019s exciting about why we go out \u2014 to have<\/span> these experiences we can\u2019t have at home. <\/span><\/p><\/blockquote>\n
