Over the past<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">several years, murals have emerged as an<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">attention-getting art form with a lot of<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">cachet, taking over entire walls inside and<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">out at galleries, restaurants, hotels and public<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">spaces across the country. What\u2019s even better<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">is that it\u2019s a genre where female artists are<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">leading the charge \u2014 a visual manifestation<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">of the current cultural zeitgeist.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Once maligned as a dubious practice, street<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">art has exploded in the digital age as a social<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">media-friendly way to draw attention to<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">neighbourhoods, causes and culture. Montreal<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">has been holding its annual MURAL Festival<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">since 2012, an 11-day celebration that has<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">contributed around 80 major works to the area<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">along Saint Laurent Boulevard. In Vancouver,<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">August is when the city\u2019s annual Mural<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Festival takes place in the Mount Pleasant<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">neighbourhood, while in the Rockies, artists<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">participating in Calgary\u2019s Beltline Urban<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Murals Project have painted about 15 new<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">murals since 2017. Meanwhile, Toronto\u2019s famous<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Graffiti Alley has become a tourist destination<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">in its own right and a regular feature in walking<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">tours organized by the Art Gallery of Ontario.<\/span><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<div class=\"image_block_single\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/sothebysrealty.ca\/insightblog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/04\/InsightSPRING19_Muralists03.jpg\" alt=\"\"><a href=\"Mural Renaissance | Wall Power\" target=\"_blank\">Large brushstrokes in mint green and pink by Madison van Rijn is one of the highlights at Toronto restaurant La Palma.<\/a><\/div>\n<blockquote><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In Toronto\u2019s restaurant scene, many of the<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">most buzzed-about hot spots are as recognizable<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">for their one-of-a-kind murals as they are for their cuisine. \u201cCompanies are really trying to<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">[give] back to the customer [by providing] a<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">genuine experience in a genuine space. More<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">importantly, I think people are looking to find <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">s<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">omething that\u2019s unique,\u201d says Madison van<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Rijn, a Toronto-based artist whose work can<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">be seen at restaurants around town, including<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Bar Isabel, El Rey and La Palma and at the<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">recently opened Avling Brewery &amp; Restaurant.<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Earlier this year, van Rijn was tapped by the<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">DesignAgency studio to create an 18.5-by-25-foot mural on the ceiling of Louix Louis, a new<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">restaurant lo<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">cated on the 31st floor of luxury<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">hotel The St. Regis Toronto. \u201cEssentially, the<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">whole thing is based around being in a glass of<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">whisky,\u201d she says of her mural. \u201cIt\u2019s definitely the<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">most opulent and involved one I\u2019ve ever done.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">For Allen Chan, founding partner at<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">DesignAgency, murals have always been a part<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">of how his team considers design. \u201cThey add texture [and] ambiance and can also be used<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">to create a unique and memorable moment that<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">underscores the history or theme of a place.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Nowhere is that moment more apparent<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">than at The Drake Hotel in Toronto. This<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">West Queen W<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">est staple has had a revolving<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">cast of murals since it opened its refurbished<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">doors in 2004, including a new lobby design by<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">artist Anna Valdez that was unveiled this past<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">December. For Mia Nielsen, curator and head of<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">cultural programming at The Drake, the walls<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">offer an exciting stage for emerging artists to<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">push their craft on a large scale. \u201cThey don\u2019t get<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">to do that every day,\u201d says Nielsen. \u201cThese large<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">spaces [create] opportunities for artists to really<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">push their work and to experiment with ideas.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">When the Drake Mini Bar opened in<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">the city\u2019s downtown last May, Nielsen<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">commissioned artist <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Rajni Perera to create a<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">custom wall-to-wall mural. \u201cI was thinking<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">about new money in the city and people of<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">colour taking up the space of the arbiters of<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">style and luxury and glamour,\u201d says Perera of<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">her warm jewel-toned portrait. Since her studies<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">at OCAD University<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, Perera\u2019s murals have<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">come and gone from the walls at art venues like<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">the Triennale Banlieue\/Suburban Triennial<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">in Laval, Quebec, and the Art Gallery of York<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">University in Toronto, but saying goodbye to<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">her work isn\u2019t something she minds. \u201cI was<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">raised a Buddhist, and absolutely nothing is<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">permanent,\u201d she says. \u201cThis is the ultimate<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">indulgence and the opposite of permanence.<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">You\u2019re going to put a lot of work into<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">something that\u2019s going to <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">be there and then it\u2019s<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">gone. But while it was there, it was great.\u201d<\/span><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<div class=\"image_block_single\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/sothebysrealty.ca\/insightblog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/04\/InsightSPRING19_Muralists02.jpg\" alt=\"\"><a href=\"Mural Renaissance | Wall Power\" target=\"_blank\">Artist Ola Volo, sits in front of the mural she created on the back wall of Sudbury's Mackey Building.<\/a><\/div>\n<blockquote><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">For Kazakhstan-born illustrator Ola Volo,<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">who splits her time between Montreal and<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Vancouver, painting murals has taken her<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">across North America, from L.A. to New York<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">City and, this past summer, to Hamilton, Ont.<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Volo works primarily outdoors in public spaces<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">where her work, she says, has the power to<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">transform entire neighbourhoods. \u201cI look at<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">the walls and how accessible they are to the<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">public and how anyone can stumble upon it.<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Even if you\u2019re not interested in art, you want<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">something that catches your eye and makes you<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">stop,\u201d she says of her stylized folk art\u2013inspired<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">pieces in places like Vancouver\u2019s Kitsilano<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">area and downtown Sudbury. \u201c[Artworks are]<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">an unapologetic way to take over space and<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">change a block or a neighbourhood that used<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">to be abandoned, not looked at as anything or<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">maybe even considered unsafe.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It\u2019s this transformative quality that makes<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">murals so attractive to artists and viewers<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">alike, says The Drake\u2019s Nielsen. \u201cThat\u2019s part of<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">what\u2019s exciting about why we go out \u2014 to have<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">these experiences we can\u2019t have at home. <\/span><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<hr>\n<blockquote>\n<p class=\"p1\"><em><span class=\"s1\">By Caitlin Agnew&nbsp;&#8211; *This article originally appeared in <span class=\"s2\"><a href=\"https:\/\/sothebysrealty.ca\/insightblog\/2019\/03\/29\/insight-the-art-of-living-spring-2019\/\">INSIGHT: The Art of Living | Spring 2019<\/a><\/span><\/span><\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>Photography Courtesy of: Steve Tsai, Ola Volo, Raffi Tutundjian.<\/em><\/p><\/blockquote>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>If your world appears a lot more colourful of late, thank the muralists.
