Standing at the podium at The Beverly<\/span> Hilton in L.A., clasping the heftier, newly<\/span> redesigned Golden Globe statuette for Best<\/span> Performance by an Actress in a TV Series,<\/span> Comedy, Rachel Brosnahan is rattling off a<\/span> list of people to thank. It\u2019s a task she failed<\/span> to complete the first time she won the trophy for<\/span> her role on Amazon Prime\u2019s period comedy<\/span> The<\/span><\/i> Marvelous Mrs. Maisel,<\/span><\/i> mostly because she was<\/span> distracted by Oprah Winfrey sitting in front of her.<\/span><\/p>\n

Tonight she is less flustered (her other win<\/span> for the role, an Emmy in 2018, may have helped),<\/span> but even though her mustard Prada frock sparks<\/span> images of her 1950s character \u2014 aspiring New<\/span> York comedienne Miriam \u201cMidge\u201d Maisel \u2014<\/span> Brosnahan doesn\u2019t quite command an audience<\/span> like Midge does. That makes this repeat win all<\/span> the more impressive but also a little ironic.<\/span> \u201cI have never done comedy, I don\u2019t come from<\/span> comedy. I was and remain absolutely horrified<\/span> by the idea of doing stand-up,\u201d the 28-year-old<\/span> actor told the media following her win. \u201cI\u2019ve<\/span> rarely read women who are as unapologetically<\/span> confident as Midge, who are proud of their<\/span> voices, who are curious and wanting to ask<\/span> questions about the world around them. I find<\/span> that inspiring and aspirational.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

These days, emerging from the sludge of<\/span> network, broadcast and OTT (over-the-top)<\/span> programming \u2014 film and TV content delivered<\/span> via the Internet \u2014 is certainly something to<\/span> aspire to, but Maisel torpedoed into the TV<\/span> world with eight Emmy wins last fall, reminding<\/span> viewers that Amazon Prime is more than a<\/span> glorified shipping service. And if Brosnahan\u2019s<\/span> early Golden Globe is a precursor, the second<\/span> season could bring even more hardware into the<\/span> streaming service\u2019s growing warehouse.<\/span><\/p>\n

A classically trained dramatic actress,<\/span> Brosnahan spent the past decade honing her<\/span> craft with gigs on<\/span> Gossip Girl<\/span><\/i>, <\/span>The Good Wife<\/span><\/i> and<\/span> Grey\u2019s Anatomy<\/span><\/i>.<\/span> At the age of 21, she landed the<\/span> bit role of \u201ccall girl\u201d on<\/span> House of Cards<\/span><\/i> on Netflix,<\/span> and executive producer Beau Willimon was so<\/span> impressed he expanded the role and named the<\/span> character Rachel Posner, resulting in Brosnahan\u2019s<\/span> first Emmy nomination. But it was the quippy<\/span> role of an affluent Jewish housewife who realizes<\/span> her potential for more than perfecting brisket and<\/span> rearing children that proved to be Brosnahan\u2019s<\/span> role of a lifetime, one she fought for. She recalls<\/span> pushing through a private stand-up audition for<\/span> show creator Amy Sherman-Palladino to land it,<\/span> even though she was \u201csick as a dog\u201d and her feet<\/span> were sweating so much that she had to take her<\/span> shoes off halfway through.<\/span><\/p>\n

That performance, coupled with Brosnahan\u2019s<\/span> recent gig as a 1950s Jewish housewife on the<\/span> short-lived WGN America\u2019s atomic-bomb drama,<\/span> Manhattan<\/em>,<\/span> was enough to convince Sherman-Palladino. The writer\u2019s penchant for fast-talking<\/span> brunettes was established years earlier on<\/span> Gilmore<\/span><\/i> Girls<\/span><\/i>,<\/span> but the idea of a series rooted in New York<\/span> stand-up\u2019s seedy underbelly was sparked by tales<\/span> from her late father, comedian Don Sherman.<\/span><\/p>\n

Sherman-Palladino\u2019s resulting lollipop world<\/span> of colourful couture, department store cosmetic<\/span> counters and a woman who waited nightly for<\/span> her husband to fall asleep before removing her<\/span> makeup (and rising at the crack of dawn to redo it<\/span> before he stirred) was an unapologetic delve into<\/span> a fresh feminist female protagonist \u2014 one who<\/span> gave a toast at her own wedding and streaked in<\/span> the quad to quell a burning bikini line following a<\/span> bleach, but who also brazenly measured her thighs<\/span> and her baby girl\u2019s worrisomely large forehead.<\/span> Maisel became an antidote to the trendy dark<\/span> and depressing series hitting the circuit, and it<\/span> landed at just the right moment in Hollywood\u2019s<\/span> Time\u2019s Up movement, which has been rife with<\/span> disenchanting stories of male comedians and the<\/span> women who were forced into the margins.<\/span><\/p><\/blockquote>\n

\u201cMidge is a woman finding a voice that she<\/span> didn\u2019t know she had and that\u2019s something<\/span> everybody can relate to,\u201d Brosnahan says. \u201cWe<\/span> all hope that we get the opportunity to reinvent<\/span> ourselves as we grow older, to take new paths and<\/span> try new things. Midge is someone who lived in a<\/span> bubble and she\u2019s experienced some things anew<\/span> for the first time and that\u2019s both inspiring and<\/span> probably frustrating. She\u2019s a little bit na\u00efve. She<\/span> felt [that] having children was the only thing she<\/span> could aspire to and I don\u2019t think she was aware it<\/span> wasn\u2019t until her world opened up.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

Brosnahan has certainly reinvented herself<\/span> over the years, toying with the idea of several<\/span> professions (doctor, psychiatrist) while growing<\/span> up, playing sports (wrestling, lacrosse) and<\/span> delving into the world of Harry Potter like so<\/span> many young adults before her. Acting was the<\/span> thing that stuck, and it has transformed her into<\/span> the happy workaholic she is today.<\/span><\/p>\n

Indeed, she doesn\u2019t seem to mind banking<\/span> 14-to-15-hour days for half the year on<\/span> Maisel<\/span><\/em> while filling her spare time with feature films like<\/span> the upcoming<\/span> Ironbark<\/span><\/em> or producing potential<\/span> projects. Where she does hesitate is in talking<\/span> about her personal life, especially when it comes to<\/span> her rumoured marriage to former<\/span> Manhattan<\/span><\/em> co-star Jason Ralph. For Brosnahan, when the focus<\/span> isn\u2019t on the work, the work suffers.<\/span><\/p>\n

But focus clearly pays off. The two Golden<\/span> Globes and an Emmy under Midge\u2019s custom-fitted<\/span> skirt really are adornments for Brosnahan. As she<\/span> tucks her second Globe (right beside the first) on<\/span> the shelf above her toilet in her New York City<\/span> apartment, it\u2019s research as usual for the actor. She<\/span> still devours stories of female legends like Phyllis<\/span> Diller, Jean Carol, Carol Burnett and Joan Rivers,<\/span> but she has also become a regular on the stand-up<\/span> scene, where she bestows lavish laughs from the<\/span> audience on anyone brave enough to climb onstage.<\/span> That\u2019s because even though Brosnahan is an award-winning pretend stand-up comedian, she\u2019s not<\/span> prepping to do the real thing anytime soon.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cI can\u2019t imagine anything braver and I am<\/span> not that brave,\u201d she says. \u201cWe discussed it very<\/span> briefly early on. Amy had said, when we were<\/span> in rehearsals, that she would write something<\/span> for me and shove me out on the stage. I ran the<\/span> other way \u2014 as fast as I possibly could.\u201d Right<\/span> onto the red carpet and into a future in lights.<\/span><\/p><\/blockquote>\n
