While moving in to your new home is an exciting step into the next chapter of your life, you may find yourself feeling a bit disoriented getting settled in your new space. To help smooth the transition after a move, here is a checklist of 7 essential steps for settling in to your new home.

Change the Locks

The first step when settling in should be to change the locks on your new home. Your home’s previous owners – along with any of their friends or family members – may still have spare keys to the home, so this is an important way to ensure your safety.

Update Address and Transfer Utilities

Register your new address with the post office, your banks and credit card companies, and any subscription services and insurance policies. Contact utility providers to transfer or set up gas, cable, electricity, phone, and internet services to your new home.

Gather Essential Supplies

Before your move, put together some essentials to get you through the first few days in your new home including toilet paper, paper towel, phone chargers, a set of towels, a change of clothes, and basic toiletries such as body wash, shampoo, conditioner, and toothpaste. You may want to bring a set of paper plates and dishware to get you through the first few meals before you unpack your kitchen belongings.

Deep Clean

There’s no better time for a deep clean than when your home is completely empty. Before unloading any of your belongings, give your new space a thorough cleaning by sanitizing bathrooms and kitchen appliances, vacuuming carpets, and wet-moping floors. Wipe down furniture surfaces and the insides of drawers before unpacking your clothing as these items can collect dust during the moving process.

Unpack Strategically

Standing in your new home surrounded by dozens of boxes can feel daunting so it is a good idea to have a plan for unpacking. Decide which rooms to unpack first based on what is most essential for your day-to-day functioning. You may want to begin with your bedroom as having your belongings organized and in their proper place will help you feel more settled when going to bed at night. Next you can begin setting up essential spaces like the kitchen or main bathrooms.

Inspect Safety Features and Set Up a Security System

Check your smoke detectors and carbon monoxide sensors and ensure you know where fire extinguishers and water shut-off valves are located. Consider setting up an alarm, motion-sensor lights, outdoor cameras, and/or a home security system to boost your new home’s safety.

Get Acquainted with the Neighbourhood

Once you’ve tackled these essential steps, it’s time to familiarize yourself with your new neighbours and surroundings. Enjoy walking around the neighbourhood checking out local parks, restaurants, shops, and other amenities. Begin fostering a sense of belonging in your new community by introducing yourself to your new neighbours and consider hosting a housewarming party.

By following these seven steps you’ll be able to establish a sense of security in your new home, familiarize yourself with your new space, and maintain organization as you unpack.
