Area Description

Port Dalhousie is a picturesque lakeside neighbourhood in St. Catharines, on the southern shore of Lake Ontario. It sits on a small peninsula between Lake Ontario and Martindale Pond, and has a distinctly old-fashioned waterfront-village character.

The area is best known for combining beach, boating, history, restaurants, and a lively summer atmosphere.

The waterfront
Lakeside Park Beach is the heart of Port Dalhousie's summer scene. It's a sandy Lake Ontario beach with views toward the harbour and lighthouse, plus picnic areas, volleyball courts and access to waterfront walking routes.

The harbour is surrounded by piers and marinas, making it a pleasant place to watch sailboats, walk along the water, fish, or catch a sunset. Port Dalhousie East Pier and the west pier give you particularly good open-water views.

Lakeside Park
Lakeside Park is probably the neighbourhood's most iconic attraction. It was developed as an amusement park in the early 1900s and helped establish Port Dalhousie as a summer resort.

Its historic Lakeside Park Carousel is the star attraction. The carousel dates to the early 1900s and features beautifully carved wooden animals. It still operates as a traditional, extremely inexpensive ride, making it one of Port Dalhousie's most charming features.

A lot of history
Port Dalhousie wasn't originally just a resort town. Its history is closely tied to the Welland Canals and Great Lakes shipping. For more than a century, its harbour served as the northern terminus of the first three Welland Canals, making it an important transportation and industrial centre.

You can still see that history in the old commercial buildings around Lock Street, Lakeport Road and Hogan's Alley, as well as the harbour and lighthouse.

The Port Dalhousie Inner Range Lighthouse, built in 1898, is another recognizable landmark at the harbour entrance.

The village atmosphere
The streets around Lock Street and Lakeport Road have an appealing small-town, summer-resort feel—older buildings, patios, cafés, restaurants, ice cream, shops and people wandering between the waterfront and beach.

It's particularly lively on summer evenings and weekends. In the off-season, it becomes much quieter and more residential.

A connection to Rush
Port Dalhousie also has a special connection to Neil Peart, the drummer and lyricist of the Canadian rock band Rush. His childhood memories of the area inspired the Rush song “Lakeside Park.” The Neil Peart Pavilion in Lakeside Park commemorates that connection.

What it feels like
I'd describe Port Dalhousie as a nostalgic Ontario beach town tucked inside St. Catharines. It's not a polished resort destination; its appeal is the combination of:

Lake Ontario sunsets and waterfront walks
A sandy beach
A century-old carousel
Historic harbour and lighthouses
Boats and marinas
Casual restaurants and patios
An old village/heritage district
Waterfront walking and cycling
A bit of local Canadian music history
It's especially nice to visit late afternoon into sunset: walk the harbour and pier, spend some time at Lakeside Park, explore the old village, and then have dinner or a drink overlooking the water.
