La Maison Barthe – An opportunity to acquire a heritage gem with acknowledged value. A noble property whose very rare decorative features have been preserved. Magnificent tiled ceilings (10 ft. at ground level, 9 ft. on 2nd floor), 3 rooms upstairs, and a superb office with its own entrance, perfect for a professional working at home.
- Historical authenticity
Built in 1895 by Georges Cloutier, the Maison Barthe, located in the Château-d'Eau district of Loretteville, has its material and formal integrity perfectly intact, which confers to it a heritage value. It ranks among the loveliest houses built in the Quebec City region. Its maintenance and upkeep reflect great care for historical authenticity. The front turret provides illumination throughout both floors, and bathes the 2nd floor sitting room in light. This sitting room leads to a balcony.
The property’s proximity to the Corridor des Cheminots bike and recreation trail and the Saint-Charles River linear park make its location perfect for cycling, walking or jogging enthusiasts.
(Excerpt from the entry for the urban building MAISON BARTHE posted on Ville de Québec’s urban heritage Web site, translated from the French)
“It is a bourgeois property built in the Second Empire architectural style. This style was inspired by the public buildings built in France during the reign of Napoleon III, and it gained a certain popularity in the United States and Canada. In America, it is also known as French Cottage or French Mansard. The property is comprised of a square, two-storey main building, a four-sided mansard roof, and a turret along the facade, partly incorporated into the architecture. The turret has a pavilion roof with a truncated peak whose slopes, like those of the main roof, are pierced with dormer windows. A front porch wraps around the sides of the house, and is topped by a balcony.
As a whole, the property has not undergone any major modification and presents excellent material and formal integrity. All its original elements have been preserved.”
