Property Description
Located at the emblematic beginning of the popular Calle Llana, just a few meters from Plaza Virrey del Pino and next to Plaza Amador de los Ríos, this unique Andalusian house combines the charm of the historic center of Baena with the proximity to the modern city and its services.
Popularly known as the House of Miss Julia, the property stands out for its imposing main facade facing Plaza Amador de los Ríos, next to the monument to the illustrious polygraph from Baena, being one of the most admired civil buildings in the locality.
The property consists of two registered properties: the main house and a garage connected to the backyard. The house was built in 1925 under the project of the architect Fernando Callejas, a disciple of Aníbal González, and is a reference of Andalusian regionalist architecture, typical of the patio houses from the 1920s and 30s.
The main house is distributed over four floors:
The ground floor is organized around an elegant entrance hall that leads to a central porticoed patio, covered by a glazed metal skylight in four colors. This space, paved in marble with geometric pattern in white and grey, articulates the different rooms on this floor, which includes two kitchens, ten bedrooms, and three bathrooms. In one corner of the patio is the main staircase, made of white marble with a bronze railing and original tiles from the Sevillian house Mensaque y Rodríguez. Also on this floor are the service staircase, another staircase to the basement, and one leading to the backyard.
The first floor is arranged around the gallery that runs along the four sides of the central patio. Here are ten rooms, five bathrooms, a toilet, and an additional kitchen. It is the most domestic floor of the house, where original hydraulic floors, wrought iron grilles, and period carpentry are preserved. Among its highlights are the fireplace in the main living room, signed by Martínez del Cid and manufactured by Mensaque y Rodríguez, and the library, equipped with a high-quality carved wood bookcase. The enclosure of the main staircase, with stained glass windows, adds a touch of color and artisan design to the gallery.
The second floor houses three rooms and access to the large terrace, from where you can admire the structure of the skylight covering the central patio, as well as the urban and natural landscapes surrounding the property. This terrace leads to two attic spaces: an old laundry room overlooking the countryside and a storage room divided into two rooms, one of them decorated with a ceramic altarpiece dedicated to San Isidro Labrador.
The basement, partially below ground level, has six rooms and a toilet. Due to the uneven terrain, all rooms have natural ventilation, either to Herranz Casado street or to the backyard. This floor features the old wine cellar, with original stone and brick walls, vaulted ceilings, iron beams, and two wells with water. The basement directly connects to the garage, which has an exit to Nicolás Alcalá street, facilitating vehicle access and loading and unloading tasks.
In addition to the property, there is an adjacent commercial space of 80 m² with shop windows facing Nicolás Alcalá street, ideal for commercial or professional activities, with a separate entrance and direct visibility from a high-traffic route that could be acquired separately.
