Even from a distance, Stralsund looks like a city that knows its beauty and strength: Gothic brick churches grow like lighthouses towards the Baltic sky, defying the whims of the sea as well as the political tides. Pomeranians, Swedes, Prussians, and others left their mark through the centuries, but they did not shake the Hanseatic foundation of the city. Churches, monasteries, and merchants' houses still stand today. The streets and alleys of the old town still run as laid out by Stralsund's founders in the Middle Ages. And anyone who walks along them senses the great history that tells of master architecture and commercial power, of civic pride and sailor romanticism, of resilience and cohesion. The inhabitants of Stralsund have preserved a unique cultural treasure over generations, for which the Hanseatic city was honored in 2002 with its inclusion in the UNESCO World Heritage List. The old town of Stralsund is surrounded by the Strelasund and various ponds (Knieperteich, Frankenteich, and Moorteich) so that it is bordered by water almost all around. Therefore, one can also speak of an old town island. In the north of the city in the district Knieper-Nord there is the lido Stralsund with a fine sandy city beach. The city's green belt includes the Sundpromenade, which runs along the banks of the Strelasund, the Bastion Belt (also known as Bastion Park), and the Wulflamufer. The green area called Hansa-Wiese in front of the Hansa-Gymnasium is a popular meeting place. In the Brunnenaue near the Strelasund, healing water was once extracted - today it is Stralsund's largest city park. At the western end of the city forest, which extends from the Moor Pond westward to the city limits, is the zoo. Stralsund has a city harbor and several marinas and is served by yachts, river cruisers, and ocean-going vessels.
