Area Description
Lake Koocanusa is 145 km of beautiful turquoise water. It offers peaceful quiet and mirror-like stillness with summer water temperatures averaging 25.5 C. The arid shoreline is home to a bounty of sandy beaches.
The lake straddles the Canadian and U.S. border in Montana. Its unique name is courtesy of Alice Beers of Rexford, Montana, who won a contest to name the new lake in the 1970s. It’s the first three letters of the Kootenay River, Canada, and USA. Koo + Can + USA = Koocanusa.
Lake Koocanusa is a manmade reservoir created in 1975 when the Libby Dam was constructed on the Kootenay River in Montana. Lake levels fluctuate throughout the year, are generally highest in July and August and decrease gradually toward winter. Koocanusa Village is well situated in the heart of the lake and enjoys the water longest as summer turns to fall.-
Skiing: downhill available at Fernie, Kimberely and Panorama Resorts (1-2 hour drive)
