Details

Located in the Cowichan Valley area of B.C.’s Vancouver Island, real estate in Duncan is strategically located in an economic hub, with a lively downtown area and thriving tourism industry. The city’s blend of modern businesses with traditional heritage homes and buildings makes Duncan a unique and lively place to live.

Known as “The City of Totems”, Duncan’s impressive display of many outdoor totems represents the city’s rich history. Duncan is located on the traditional lands of the Quw’utsun’ (Cowichan) people, who represent the largest Indigenous population in B.C. The City of Duncan, which was incorporated in 1912, shares a boundary with the Cowichan Tribes' land in the heart of the city’s commercial core, and Duncan’s Indigenous heritage remains an important part of the city’s culture.

Duncan is considered the commercial centre of the Cowichan Valley region. With hundreds of unique shops and restaurants in the downtown core, plenty of scenic parks, and the world’s largest collection of outdoor totems, Duncan draws in visitors from across B.C. and the rest of Canada. The city’s downtown core features a variety of eclectic shops and restaurants, along with charming heritage buildings.

At the Cowichan Valley Museum – housed inside the original Duncan train station built in 1912 – visitors can take in Cowichan Valley’s unique history, from the original First Nations inhabitants to European settlement. The Quw’utsun’ Cultural and Conference Centre is a popular spot to enjoy exhibits, artwork, and traditional foods from the region’s Indigenous populations, including live demonstrations of weaving, beading, and spinning and educational programs.

Duncan’s abundant natural beauty can be admired at the Somenos Marsh, a rich wetland complex that is home to a diverse range of birds, fish, and other wildlife. The expansive Cowichan River Provincial Park, which spans almost 20 km from Lake Cowichan Village to just south of Duncan, is internationally recognized for its prime fishing conditions and scenic trails through majestic Douglas fir and Hemlock forests. The park’s stunning Cowichan River is a prime spot for tubing, canoeing, kayaking, and more.

Featuring both charming cottages and luxurious modern houses with unbeatable waterfront views, Duncan’s real estate market offers the tranquillity of island living amongst a bustling growing economy.
