Kelly Deck is renowned for tranquil and luxurious interiors. Her firm’s work focuses on interior design for high-end custom homes, and extends to home décor and turnkey services. With 15 years’ experience, Kelly’s interior design and home decor ideas have gained an international following—through her column in the Globe and Mail, her series on Home and Garden Television, and ongoing contributions to Western Living, Canadian House and Home, and Style at Home.
Known for taking a very holistic approach to designing a home, Kelly knows that it starts with listening. “We want to know all about our clients lives – their families, their past times, their work schedules, how they entertain, what they do in their leisure and what drives them crazy. We want to know everything so that we get it right. We know we’ve achieved that when the client says things like “I’m living in my dream home” or “I never imagined it would feel so calm, so me”.
We sat down with Kelly to discuss her real estate experiences and what she loves so much about her home:
1. Think back to the first place you lived in on your own, what were your walls decorated with?
KD: Oh my goodness – I lived in a basement suite in Victoria, BC while I was going to college. We had art posters on the walls and probably some of my sketches.
2. What did you love most about the first place you purchased?
KD: The first place I ever purchased was a 600 square foot loft with 10’4 ceilings. I took it back to the studs and completely overhauled the floor plan creating a 7 ft. long island in the kitchen (I love to cook) and a 10 ft. banquet which allowed me to seat 6 for dinner any evening. The look was quiet and modern and I often miss it’s tranquility.
3. How would you describe your interior design style now?
KD: The homes we create in our company Kelly Deck Design range from ocean front minimalist modern to traditional Shaughnessy mansions. With every project we’re concerned with elegance and expressed craftsmanship; each home has it’s own character inspired by the personalities and needs of the home owners. In this way my personal style is very relaxed and contemporary: I love light wood floors, white-washed walls, relaxed furnishings and beautiful artwork on the walls
4. What room do you spend the most time in now?
KD: The kitchen – I love to cook and entertain.
5. What is the #1 feature you’d look for in your next home?
KD: Hmmmm. I would love full height windows that look onto a courtyard or garden. The more natural light in a home the better.
6. What does your dream home look like?
KD: I have a different dream home for every life I imagine possible: a beach house, an island home, a Mediterranean villa – I’ve designed and furnished all of them in my head. One that resonates lately is a rustic but modern bungalow on a flat lot looking over garden and grasslands with a beautiful kitchen and dining room that open on to outdoor space – a home that effortlessly accommodates guests and family. I imagine it as a summer home – perhaps in Lake Country close to my parents.
