This stately manor was originally a red brick house built in 1847 for Ephrem Hudon, a Montreal Merchant and his wife Justine Solomee Hurtubise on land adjacent to her father’s farm. When William Simpson, a Montreal Banker, purchased the house in 1879, he made elaborate changes including the central tower and the wrap around veranda.
Once known as the “Riverview” this Victorian style gem is a fine example of preservation undertaken by the previous owners (a designer and a draftsman) in 1985 and still bears the name in stained glass above the main door. Classified as “Exceptional” in 1987, the house was awarded the City of Montreal’s Heritage Emeritus Award in 2005. The current owners have painstakingly maintained the intrinsic charm during their over 20 years of ownership and have reunited the original elements including the attached condominium townhouse at 513 Cote St Antoine and the original “Well house” at 555 Victoria to create a unique property with spacious grounds in the heart of Westmount.
The main house could easily be reconnected to the townhouse at the back (513 Cote St Antoine) if needed as it was once part of what is now 515 Cote St Antoine.
The top floor attic of the main house is spacious and bright and could easily be divided into extra bedrooms if required. A deck could be possible on this level, at the back, overlooking the greenery at the back. The gardens of 555 Victoria blend seamlessly with those of the Cote St Antoine houses but provides a peaceful oasis Ideal as an artist’s retreat, for guests and even perhaps for family members who want to be close by, this delightful residence is cheerful and bright.
555 Victoria has 1 parking spot, while 513 & 515 have 2 spots each. Plans for a double garage were drawn up and approved in 1990 by the City of Westmount and a permit was issued at that time. Present owners have all of the documentation and plans in there possession should the new owners need them. Own a piece of history in the heart of Westmount!
